Contents of Puran Poli Thali
  • Puran Poli is a sweet rolled roti stuffed with a mixture of cooked gram pulses and jaggery with a flavour of cardamom and nutmeg.
  • Katachi Amti is a hot and sour curry made from the stock (boiled water) of cooked gram pulses.
  • Potato Subji is a main dish made from boiled potatoes, stir fried with a hint of green chilli, ginger, Hing, chopped onions, cumin seeds (Jeera), mustard Seeds (Mohari), curry leaves, and turmeric powder.
  • Plain Rice is served with a sweetened yellow curry called Varan which is made from cooked pigeon peas (Toor Dal) with a flavour of Hing, Turmeric, and Jaggery.
  • Kothimbir Wadi is a deep fried sider made from a boiled mixture of multi-grain flour and coriander with added green chilli, ginger, and garlic.
  • Kurdai is deep fried salty and crunchy sider made from dried wheat paste.
  • Koshimbir is a sweet and sour salad containing chopped cucumber, tomato, and curd.


Puran Poli Recipe
  • Ingredients - Gram Pulse, Jaggery, Cardamom, Nutmeg, Wheat Flour.
  • Process -
  1. Soak the gram pulses in water.
  2. Cook properly soaked gram pulses.
  3. Separate the stock (boiled water) from the cooked gram pulses. This will be later used for making Katachi Amti.
  4. After removing the stock, add jaggery, cardamom, and nutmeg (as per taste) to the cooked gram pulses and cook again until the mixture becomes soft and thick.
  5. Fine grind the mixture manually. Let it cool down.
  6. Make soft thin dough balls of wheat flour.
  7. Stuff the fine mixture inside the dough balls and roll the poli.
  8. Heat the Tawa or pan on a medium heat and transfer the poli to the pan.
  9. Cook the poli from both the sides by applying sufficient oil before and after turning the sides. Cook the poli until you see brown spots on both sides.
  10. Serving Tip - A Puranpoli tastes best when served hot with ghee added on top of it.

Puran Poli is a traditional food item which is prepared and consumed across various districts of Maharashtra. It is an essential item for any small or significant festival in the State. The curry (Katachi Amti) made from the stock (boiled water) of the cooked pulses along with Puran Poli offer a great combination of hot and sweet, at the same time, nutritious supply for everybody. The process of making Puran and Puran Poli is a little lengthy and requires skill and practice to achieve the best look and taste; but those who have tasted this delicacy would confirm that the efforts are worth it indeed.
