Interesting article published in Times of India about changing trends of solo dining!
I'm a frequent solo diner, but it has always been a little awkward experience for me. Recently I visited a popular Thali restaurant in Pune for dining alone. Despite being seated at a fairly odd couple's table, the waiter came over and asked whether I could accommodate another solo diner - on a couple's table! That too after ordering a quite expensive meal. The other day, I visited a South Indian restaurant where I was made to shift tables a couple of times and was then ignored for a long time. I chose to just walk out without having the food.
From the other side of the table, we have observed consistent demand for single-serve portions at our cloud kitchen - Khawakee Foods. It is challenging to prepare single serve portions, offering a range of meal items to keep the solo diners returning. Preparing small portions for an immediate online order, and the time it takes to pack small portions, increases the order preparation time and work for the kitchen staff.
Acknowledging the demand, we have curated single-serve options like Katachi Amti and Plain Rice Combo, Puran Poli Combo, Shrikhand Puri, and Chhole Puri, etc. to cater to the solo diners who crave homely Maharashtrian food, not so easily available in the market.
But surely, the solo dining experiences are getting better. There is a huge potential market of solo diners seeking options that are pocket-friendly and better in quality than the typical tiffin or ‘mess’ services. The potential market is growing, considering the incoming population of students and working professionals moving to big cities, with a concentration in the outskirts.
